Of Human Kindness
K. Radhakumar *
The rain god has come here
And everyone is happy
In times of plenty.
There it is high summer
And the rivulets are dry.
It is a severe drought
And thousands will die of starvation.
Children cry for a morsel of food;
The homes echo
With the cries of children.
The streets, the hills, the forests
All send back echoes.
The earth rotates on its axis
And there is no change
In the revolution of the earth around the sun.
God here is not God there.
No God listens to the dying children
In a world
Where God is long dead.
People in another part of the world
Listen to the cry for a morsel of food
From the drought hit area.
They send humanitarian aid to the needy;
The two friends
Across the geographical boundaries share everything
And make up for the loss of God
In a dry place
Flooded with the waters of human kindness.
