Northeast women writers meet underway
Nagaland Post | Dimapur Sep 14
Phukan questioned why the mainstream scholars and observers could not understand the diversity of the region called northeast, and asked whether they could even imagine that literature would be talked about in the same breathe. Deliberating on the diversity of the region, Phukan said some states in the region have a heritage of rich oral literature while other states like Manipur and Assam also have written literature.
Also speaking on the topic ‘Contemporary literature of the north-east’, Dr. Temsula Ao said oral traditions which flourished much more before the advent of writing not only contained stories, songs and other sayings but was also the repository of knowledge and philosophy of the people. She said that seeking inspiration from the past, the writers were now querying about the identity, cultural relevance with the times and ethnic aspirations of a group of people who she said has lived long in the midst of “un-acknowledgement” by the fellow countrymen.
