Night Blues
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
The authority upstairs
Has no influence
Over the inhabitants downstairs.
And the New Year
Will not bring
A new life
If one does not fully exploit
One's day-to-day life.
A tall, thin and lean person understood
What the Brutuses of the world
Failed to understand:
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.
The past is over.
Or is it?
Really over like the finality of death?
A statement or a question!
Both as a statement and question
It has a hollow ring to it.
There is no man
With no sense of history;
The dawn will not have rosy cheeks
After a sleepless night.
A year-long period has been spent
Running round in circles.
At the end of the day
I sigh deeply at the guilty feelings
I have not had much of a life.
Life dreams many dreams
Ultimately, life itself is a dream.
Cry for the moon!
Dream on!
The little dream that I dreamt
In my early college days
Is it more beautiful, and livelier
Than my wife of twenty years,
A proud mother of four lovely children?
Oh, dear
I have not had much of a love.
I do not move up the social ladder
For I have not had much of an education.
I have dreamt my life away,
Never really living as I ought to.
And I am praying for
The New Year
To greet me with a broad smile.
Help me friend,
If you have any influence upstairs.
