Need to keep one’s mind open : After Class X what ?
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: March 22 2016 -
The Class X exams conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are over and in a few days time, the Class XII examinations conducted by the two said Boards will follow suit.
It is the same with the school/schools that come under the Indian Council of Secondary Education (ICSE) here.
And in little more than a month, probably by May, the results of the Class X and Class XII examinations will be declared and to be sure some students will feel a sense of achievements while others will be left regretting for not putting in the required labour.
Marks or grades, this is what will decide the academic pursuit of the students some time hence and again admission, primarily after the Class XII stage, will largely depend on the marks secured by the students in the board exams.
In the absence of a better option, it is marks that students will have to rely upon and this is something which all parents will look forward to come the results declaration date.
Another question which must be troubling the minds of parents/guardians and the students themselves is, after Class X or Class XII, what ?
Given that the Science stream seems to have caught the imagination of everyone, it will not be surprising to see parents and guardians coaxing their children and ward to take up this stream after the Class X exams never mind the fact that a particular student is more primed to take up either Commerce or Arts.
Just as the right choice can have a defining impact on the academic pursuit of the young students, it also stands that a wrong choice can also leave a deep scar on the students.
This is where parents and elders need to explore their mind and sincerely see which stream will be most suited for their children.
Success comes only when the child is given the opportunity to pursue what he or she likes and not something which is superimposed by parents and the elders.
It may be lack of time or the failure to study which stream will be best suited for their children, but more often than not one sees parents and elders deciding which stream the young students should opt for without asking their preference.
Guidance is something far removed from imposing one’s ideas and likes and dislikes on the young students and the sooner parents and elders come around to this idea, the better it would be for the students.
On their part, students too need to come out and voice their likes and dislikes rationally and convincingly.
Success cannot and should not be determined by marks alone but by knowing one’s strength and likes and dislikes and for this to happen, all should be ready to keep their minds open.
