NE may not cash in on direct transfer
Seven Sisters Post | Guwahati, Dec 30
As the political satire goes, “First rule of politics: Never believe in anything until it is officially denied”, the rush of the UPA government to start the direct cash transfer of subsidy scheme may turn out to be a farce for tens of thousands of BPL families in the Northeast.
The reason: an acute lack of basic banking facilities in most of the unbanked areas of the region, with a majority of the population in rural areas still out of financial inclusion. According to a high-level committee report of the Reserve Bank of India, the ratio of bank accounts in the region in 2005 was 37.3 per 100 persons, which have improved marginally in the past four years, but is still well below the national average of 60 per 100 persons.
