More than 30 days of LPG campaign : No concrete action seen so far
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: December 21 2015 -
It has been more than 30 days since The Sangai Express launched the series of report under the banner, WANTED : Cooking Gas Not Laughing Gas.
The reports were all damning and surely some some punitive action ought to have been taken up or is it a case of the different gas agencies again submitting fudged reports to explain the shortfalls ?
As the title of the banner suggests, there is nothing to laugh about in the reports which have been carried faithfully every single day for over a month now and the natural question is why has no punitive action been taken up so far.
That something was amiss was clear for how could one explain the fact that while genuine LPG consumers cannot receive their allotted quota of 12 refilled cylinders in a year, there is no shortage of the same in the black market.
Things were and are still so blatant that one can easily see filled LPG cylinders sold at road side kiosks locally known as pan dukans.

So from consumers not receiving the subsidy amount in their respective bank accounts to some just receiving two or three refills from April till date while some have received more than 20 to distributors submitting fudged report of distribution to the IOC, the misdoings have been succinctly laid down.
Other than the State Government writing to the authority concerned and the announcement that steps are being taken up to streamline the distribution system, not much has been heard so far. And this is what is disturbing.
Other than the report that a local club at Khumbong has taken up steps with an agency over the fudged report submitted to the IOC, the silence of the numerous civil society organisations over the matter is surprising.
Remember the numerous civil society organisations are well known for being very vocal and it is this selective silence which rings out the loudest.
Following the series of reports on the manner in which some of the distributors have been fudging the reports submitted to the IOC, the least that can be done now is to cross check the report of the distributors with the daily newspapers which all carry news of gas delivery daily.
Examine the report carried in the local newspapers and compare it with the report submitted by the distributors.
Not a very tough task and the reports carried by The Sangai Express should be more than clear that there is a real need to cross check the reports.
It is only when some action is taken up against the distributors that concrete changes can be expected.
Absolutely makes no sense to deprive the people of their rightful share of subsidised cooking gas for the benefits of some.
It will also help if the State Government can get down to the task of checking if any of the suited, booted officials are receiving subsidised cooking gas or not.
Only then will the concept of subsidised have any meaning here.
