Modernity still a distant dream in remote Manipur village
The Sentinel | Imphal Nov 13
Not unexpectedly, education is the most neglected area in these villages. Some Imphal based journalists saw for themselves the hopeless and pathetic education system in these tribal areas. On October 31, the journalists found that one young boy was teaching the students of four standard together in a single room in the Government High School at Senvon village. The jittery “teacher” who was teaching English, arithmetic and geography simultaneously to the students said that there were 5 students each in standards of eight, six and three. There was just one student in standard one.
The youth, John Lalchawnlien, told the bewildered journalists that there were just three teachers, one of whom was the head master L Batkung. Other teachers and staff had been transferred elsewhere on political intervention. The three teachers come for some days in a year to sign in the attendance registers and update the official works. All three of them had signed till October 19. In their hurry, they had signed even on those days which were government holidays; they had signed on October 2 and October 16 which were government holidays in Manipur. The “proxy teacher” said that the teachers paid him Rs 3,000 per month for teaching those 16 students. He disclosed that he had recently passed the 11th standard.
