Meiteis cry for tribal tag
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (Dec 9):
Concerned at the manner in which the tribals in hills and Meiteis in the valleys of Manipur are divided in categorisation of various communities, a group of Meiteis has decided to relinquish its general category tag to seek schedule tribe status.
The newly-formed Schedule Tribe Demand Committee in a memorandum to the governor Gurbachan Jagat has claimed that the valley inhabitant Meeteis or the Meiteis have their roots in the hill tribes and that in fact they are a tribe and as such should be categorised as a schedule tribe on par with other tribes of Manipur.
