Manipur embodies concerns of minorities in India's northeast

Indian forces have been stationed in Manipur for nearly 40 years because armed groups have been fighting for the state's independence from India. Manipur was once an independent nation, until it was defeated by the British army in 1891. It was gradually incorporated into India after 1947, when it had just become independent.
As in other northeastern states of India, many citizens in Manipur were opposed to their state's incorporation into India.
