Manipur acts but Assam sleeps

As an ongoing drive against illegal migrants gained momentum across the Northeast, Manipur “pushed back” over 100 non-tribals — most of whom are suspected Bangladeshis — to Assam over the past two days but Dispur appeared to have little clue of the inflow through the small township of Jiribam bordering Barak Valley.
On Sunday, 40 passengers could not produce valid papers and were pushed back towards Assam from where they came. “Several of them were carrying papers signed by village headman or affidavits signed and drafted by advocates,” an official at the FCP said. Officials in the Assam home department, however, said they had no knowledge about Manipur’s push-back.
