Imphal, Oct 17: “Bunglawn is a special place and it’s not an ordinary village”, says Pukhrem Sharatchandra Singh, MLA of Moirang Assembly Constituency at the Dr Kalam Day celebration at Bunglon High School in Churachandpur District of Manipur Tuesday.
Speaking at the commemoration program of the Visit of the then President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to Bunglon High School twelve years ago, Sharatchandra said that the people of Bunglawn Region are fortunate lots to have the blessings of the former President.
He said that Dr Kalam was an extraordinary person, a great scientist and statesman. He encouraged the students and villagers to emulate the footprints of the late President.
Narrating the cordial relations between the people of Moirang and those living in the foothills of majestic Thangjing / Thangting, the MLA said that they are like one family since time immemorial. He said that the relationship between the hills and the valley have to be uphold by one and all. The MLA informed that a particular day would be dedicated for the people of Thangjing / Thangting hills during the forthcoming Moirang Lai Haraoba beginning from October 24 to promote cultural integration.

Stressing the need for promotion and protection of environment, Sharatchandra said that human life span depends on how we treat and care for the nature. He fervently appeals to the village chiefs of Thangjing / Thangting Hills Range to work for promotion and protection of environment.
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who is being remembers as the people’s president made a historic visit to a small Bunglawn Village in Churachandpur District on October 16, 2006 on the invitation of Gin Gangte, the then Headmaster of Bunglon High School. The former President interacted with village chiefs and hundreds of students for more than an hour during the visit. The President promised for setting up of Computer Centre at Bunglon High School which was inaugurated by the then Governor of Manipur Dr SS Siddhu on January 11, 2008.

In his keynote address, Gin Gangte, the then Headmaster of Bunglon High School and now a member of the Indian Information Service (IIS) said that the landmark visit of the President has transformed Bunglawn and its surrounding villages for a better future.
He said that the 5 kms long Moirang – Bunglawn road was blacktopped within two weeks which was left unattended for the last 70 years. He further said that a new electric transformer and water pipes and many more developmental works were put in place with the impending visit of the President twelve years ago.

On April 12, 2006, Gin Gangte met the President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi for more than 20 minutes. He invited the President to visit Bunglawn “to know the real faces of India”, to which the President promised to make a visit whenever he visit Manipur. Six months down the line, the President fulfilled his promised with the “Great October Visit” on October 16, 2006.
Floral tribute to Dr Kalam led by MLA P Sharatchandra was another important feature of the Dr Kalam Day celebration.
Sharatchandra also gave away Red Blankets to Village Chiefs of Bunglawn and its surrounding villages with the aim of fostering cultural integration.
The celebration was also attended by Seilenmang Khongsai, Member, ADC / Churachandpur, Village Chiefs, staff and students of Bunglon High School.
