Makuilongdi monolith: A perspective
Seven Sisters Post | Saint Kamei, Tue, 30 Oct 2012
It is not often that professionals, with cushy jobs and sumptuous city environment to be content with, embark on a tour of rural parts of Northeast India. When Zeliangrong Citizens Forum (ZCF), a social network initiative with over 4,000 Facebook members, organised a three-week journey (October 6 to 22) through some of the most inhospitable terrains of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland, it piqued interests.
If efforts are not made to seek a common ground, things can turn ugly when someone, unwittingly or knowingly, steps on other’s toe, as was witnessed when Zeliangrong Union took offence for what they believed was a slight over their authority. And one couldn’t be faulted for meaning to find out what it was all about — whether this assertion of ethnic identity help or hamper the overarching Naga issue? Does the Zeliangrong community which shares history, also believe in a shared destiny? What does this team of professionals, scholars and students wish to get out to the expedition?
Imagine a pan-Northeast expedition of this type — the outcome can only be positive. It could start “an end of the petty grievances, domestic fights, the criticism (sic) and worn-out system of belief that have strangled our people for too long,” just as Rangro Herie, convener of ZCF, said.
