Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) 2016-17 held a press conference on the 24th June, Saturday on issues pertaining to Manipur University and the location of AR post on MU Campus.
Speaking to media persons, Buchi Mayanglambam, President, MUSU 2016-17 said Manipur University is lagging behind other central universities in the North East. He blamed the university authority and the staff including both teaching and non teaching for not being able to list in the top 100 universities in India.
He said the new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adya Prasad Pandey has been trying to streamline the irregularities created by the former VC but has largely neglected the academics of the university. He said the VC arrives at his office late and frequently on leave.
The negligence and lack of sincerity by a person who should be the role model of the university family has led to the downfall of MU. He said the VC has been intimated numerous times to arrive office on time and to make routine inspection in the offices at A-Block and the departments. But the VC has failed to respond till now.
Buchi said there are no regular Registrar, Controller and Librarian. The VC assured to fill the said posts after the code of conduct is lifted in March. But it is been three months since the code of conduct has been lifted and the VC has not taken any action to fill the said posts. Due to the absence of a regular registrar, the joint registrar and the deputy registrar are acting on their own will. On the other hand the library is in a disarray, lacking basic amenities.

Terming the negligence of the teaching staff as the main reason for the failure of the university to be included in the list of top 100 universities, he said the teachers who earn a handsome salary of more than rupees 1 lakh a month are negligent and lack sincerity in their profession.
He said according to UGC ruling a teacher should remain in the department for 40 hours a week, but at MU teachers leave the department after one or two classes a day. He said discussion and discourse, and interaction between the students and the teachers are more important than the class room teachings.
But due to the negligence of the teachers the students are suffering lacking motivation. He said the teachers are not up to date and they stick to their old, outdated ideas lacking appreciation and acceptance of new ideas from the students. He said since the VC has failed to monitor such important areas in the university functioning, MUSU 2016-17 will monitor it.
He said the teachers will be made to remain in the department from 10am to 4pm. He also threatened to close the VC, Registrar, FO and other offices if they fail to arrive on time.
On the other hand, speaking about the location of Assam Rifles post on MU campus, Buchi said MU is the only university in the world where a military post is located and armed personnel are allowed to enter the vicinity of the institution freely and without any pretext.
Condemning the militarisation of the university he said, students feel like entering a battle zone passing armed personnel in uniform and armoured vehicles while entering the university gate. He said MUSU will launch an agitation to shift the AR post to a more suitable place and make the university a military free zone.
He also appealed the CSOs, student unions and all the stakeholders and the locals living around the university campus to extend support to the cause.
