Kungyee selected for World Premiere at Australia’s Aperture Festival

Kungyee, a documentary film produced by Pamreiso Shimray and directed by Chaoba Thiyam, has been selected for World Premiere at Aperture Festival at Melbourne, Australia slated for November 22 to 23.
In an official selection of films declared on Friday, the organisers of Asia Pacific International Ethnographic Documentary Festival 2013 announced the selection of Kungyee among 13 films for Experiential Ethnographic Films Program and 17 films for Cinematic Program.
Kungyee is selected under Experiential Ethnographic Films Program at Aperture Festival and will be screened along with other selected documentaries in the Yasuko Hiraoka Myer room, Sidney Myer Asia Centre, The University of Melbourne.
Kungyee is a debut production of a journalist Pamreiso Shimray. It is set in Ningthi village under Kamjong Sub-division, Ukhrul district, Manipur. The film documents the dying rituals of rain invocation among the Tangkhul Nagas.
The film, produced with the support of Tribal Research Institute Manipur, has also been screened at "A film Fest on Tangkhul Culture" in Ukhrul 2012 and Shillong 2013.

Set in Ningthi village, situated in the eastern fringes of Ukhrul district, Manipur India, this film documents the dying rituals of Kungyee.
Kungyee is a native parlance for rituals associated with the invocation of rain after the sowing of seeds at jhum fields. Ningthi is one among the few Tangkhul tribesmen
that is now struggling to keep the tradition alive.
