India mum on UN queries about eviction
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (Sept 27):
Cries of 15 families who have been rendered homeless in the state’s relentless drive for what it called “development” have reached the United Nations. However, so far the government of India and the government of Manipur have not risen to the occasion.
Talking to Seven Sisters Post, human rights activist Jiten Yumnam said that despite the office of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations at Geneva having acknowledged receiving the communication in connection with the eviction from the Special Procedures Division of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the UN way back on July 11, 2011, no reply has been forthcoming from the government of India. The 15 families continue to be homeless.
