Indeed the Night was Wild
Homen Thangjam *
If I'm on my bed death-bed,
I know I've more years left!
Yet imagine me floating on a purple haze
With only words left on my lips
Like wind on dry sands
That only caresses without speaking,
I pray, I can only move my lips,
Like crawling snakes
So that you can read me.
Often you've encountered snakes
My infidelities, snakes, you called
Read them through and through,
Even talked,
Like the night you looked yourself
At the mirror, and talked,
About the empty bed
You make on the floor,
Where the absent me sleeps,
Or the faint footsteps,
At which you jump, which I never tread
And cursed that snake that changed me
The bites on my body that poisoned me
Kisses that deranged me
The foolish toad, eating the wild mushroom!
Then at the sound of our child whimpering
Assured him all is well
Just that the night is wild
Sands caressed your eyes, watered them.
Indeed the night was wild.
Indeed the night was wild.
