In office for the past 365 days : BJP in the seat under Modi
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: May 28 2015 -
A five year term and one year in office. What is the big deal here ?
If one takes it by the number of months or even days, this should not mean much, but it is nonetheless important to note that after more than 30 years, the Parliamentary election in 2014 gave a clean sweep to a single political party.
All that more remarkable if one takes into consideration the fact that unlike 1984, there was no sympathy wave as such in 2014.
It was a blunt rejection of the Congress led NDA Government as well as a thumbs up sign to the BJP under Narendra Modi.
The numbers should be more than self explanatory. Out of the 543 Parliamentary seats that went to polls one year back, 282 gave their verdict in favour of BJP candidates.
Taken together this meant that the National Democratic Alliance or NDA secured 336 seats.
A repeat performance of the Congress in the 1984 general election when the sympathy wave played a decisive role and gave a never before seen verdict in favour of the Congress.
The sympathy wave grew from the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In as much as it was the BJP all the way in the 2014 general election, it also meant that the Congress was literally reduced to a minor player with only 44 MPs, not even securing a position from where it could have named someone as the leader of the Opposition.
In all, the Congress led UPA now has 58 MPs, a far cry from the days when it led the UPA Government for two consecutive terms under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
As expected, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a personal touch in announcing the one year tenure in office of the BJP led NDA Government.
As reported, this is something which the Congress and the UPA Government could not do and here is a lesson for all.
One year in office is probably too short a time to judge the performance of a Government but it is to the credit of the BJP that so far there is nothing much to suggest that the Government is not on the right track.
The Prime Minister may be lampooned for spending too much time on foreign soil, but then this may just be what the political doctors would prescribe as the world has already become some sort a global village.
The need to reach out to other countries and Nations need not be stressed here and as things stand today, the image of India in the international fora seems to have gone up a notch or two.
From Look East to Act East, the BJP under Narendra Modi is obviously intent on reaching out to India’s immediate neighbours.
It cannot be bouquets all the way and despite the positives, no one can deny that some extreme elements have been treated with kids’ gloves.
This should explain the attacks on places of worship, notably the ransacking of Churches.
This should explain why a BJP leader had the temerity to say that anyone who wishes to eat beef should either go to Pakistan or any of the Mid-East countries.
