In Memory of a Dead Singer
K. Radhakumar *
A good singer
He was
And was rightly regarded
As one of the greatest singers
Of his time.
He was blessed with a beautiful singing voice
And he sang many songs
For singing was his life.
When I heard
Birds singing at dawn
I remembered our singer.
Listening to him sing was
A queer sensation;
Sometimes I felt like a child
And he was singing a lullaby to me.
At other times, he sang me to sleep
And my mother would come in my dream.
Night fell
Just after the clock struck twelve noon.
The singer fell ill
And his illness was diagnosed as mouth cancer.
He could not speak,
Let alone sing.
What a cruel joke!
Tears coursed down his face.
I do not know if
He was cruelly deceived;
I do not ask a reason
For everything that happens in this world.
But I did not want to see
His big, soulful eyes.
He lay helpless on his bed
And let providence decide
The path to the ultimate bonfire.
