Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), a National Institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Imphal, Manipur received the prestigious eNorth East Summit Award for the year 2016 at a glittering function held at North Eastern Council, Shillong. The eNorth East Award 2016 with the theme ‘Digital North East for Digital India’ organized by the North East Development Foundation (NEDF), Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), and Government of Meghalaya and supported by the North Eastern Council, Govt. of India attracted a large number of people and organizations from different walks of lives. The main objective of the award was to recognize ICT based innovators in North East India in different areas for development of North East .
IBSD has been tirelessly working since 2001 in the North East Biodiversity and Bioresources, which is amongst the world’s top 10 Biodiversity Hot Spots, said Professor Dinabandhu Sahoo, Director IBSD. The Institute has created a lot of data over a period of time and now it is time the benefit should reach to the people for their socio-economic development. NE region have some unique flora and fauna as well as huge tourism potential.
Each state in the region is unique and has great potential for Sustainable Development. Therefore it is high time the benefit should be reaped said, Professor Sahoo. However, there is a word of caution as the region is ecologically sensitive we have to take care of the environment and go for sustainable Ecotourism.
Last year we launched India’s First Cherry Blossom Festival initiative in Shillong, which attracted huge International attraction. The impact brought a huge Japanese delegation in February 2016 to India and together we launched India’s First Indo-Japan Sakura initiative to strengthen the bilateral friendship said Prof. Sahoo. We have also launched a campaign to save our biodiversity and protect the environment.
IBSD won the award for it’s outstanding contribution in ‘Development and maintenance of ICT-enabled Bioresources Database of North Eastern Himalayan (Indo-Myanmar) Biodiversity Hotspot’. The other organizations that received the award in other categories are UNICEF, CDAC, AIIMS-New Delhi etc.
I dedicate this award to the people of North East and urge them to protect it’s unique biodiversity and environment .Our responsibility has now increased many fold after this award and we will work more to fulfill the aspiration of the people said Prof. Sahoo.
