Huts on the Phumdi of Loktak
Brajeshwor Moirangthem *
Huts on the phumdi have a charm of its own –
A paradise on the earth,
And abode of the goddess Nature.
Who can ignore the beauty of huts on phumdi?
Boat houses of the Dal Lake –
A beauty alloyed with Nature.
Loktak is mother of lakhs of children
Moher of the inhabitants living
In and around her breast.
Human greed and selfishness
Make her suffer at the hands of the traitors
Who snatch her children from her lap.
Why do you burn the huts on the phumdi of Loktak?
Why Loktak – a reservoir of human needs?
A lover of Loktak should adorn her beauty.
Improvement of catchment area and removal of silt –
An obligation to the mother Loktak.
Why should we destroy her pristine beauty?
My heart aches to thin –
Huts on the Loktak only remain in records;
New generations ask a question –
Whether Loktak bears huts on her phumdi.
I doubt if the new generation answers this question.
May Loktak and her children live long!
