Hilly terrain, poor connectivity & now diesel hike: Hard times for NE
Times of India | TNN | Sep 15, 2012, 10.29PM IST
With hilly terrain and poor train connectivity to all corners, the northeastern states are expected to be the worst hit zone because of the hike in diesel price. As most states in the region do not have rail services to carry essential commodities, NE heavily depends on road communication for transportation of food, fuel and other essentials.
According to AIRTWF, Assam unit, the diesel price hike will hit the region, especially Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur, the most. "Though the AIMTC has hiked the road freight to 15 per cent, it is going to be more than that in the NE region. The region is depending on road transport to bring essential goods. With such abnormal hike in diesel price, the prices of essential commodities in NE states will cost more than anywhere else in the country," said Mathura Das, the president of the state unit.
