Hazy pre-poll scenario
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: May 09 2015 -
Though confined to the tribal areas the ADC elections are very important.
The polls could not be held for 20 years despite ceaseless efforts of the government.
When at least these were held last time there were troubles from many sides.
In trampling democratic norms the candidates had to file nomination papers in Imphal, not in their respective districts and this was because of the death threats they faced.
As many candidates stayed away from the polls several Congress candidates got walk over.
The situation is no better this time also. Congress president Gaikhangam says that because of the NSCN (IM) threat the Congress cannot field candidates in all segments in Senapati and Tamenglong districts.
Significantly, after the spirited denial by the UNC Gangmei has stopped dragging this organisation into the controversy. But Gangmei is taking the people as fools.
Why should the Congress feel threatened in Tamenglong and Senapati districts only and not in the remaining constituencies?
Besides in these two districts also the Congress faces no threat in other segments which have strength of 24 members each.
The party cannot field the candidates in some segments only in these two districts.
He is mistaken if he thinks that people will readily believe him when he makes such an irresponsible and puerile statement while trying to justify the non-allotment of party tickets to a handful of aspirants.
Secondly it does not bode well for the BJP which is frantically trying to open an account in the ADC elections that there is a charge of corruption while allotting party tickets.
This charge may be the stone around the neck of a drowning man. There are many good reasons why the BJP has so far failed to have an MP, MLA or any elected representative.
Are regional and national leaders of the BJP taking note of the serious developments which may sound the death knell of the party in the long run?
