SHRI HAORONGBAM BISHWARUP SINGH Akademi Award: Thang-Ta
Shri Haorongbam Bishwarup Singh, born in 1938 at Nambol Awang Leikai under Bishnupur District, is a popular artiste and ardent promoter of traditional Manipuri martial art form, Thang-Ta.
He started learning Thang-Ta and other traditional martial arts such as Sarit-Sarat and Mukna from the tender age of 8 years. His early days were shaped by his illustrious guru Rudra Singh.
Later he mastered the various techniques of Thang-Ta under the watchful eyes of several revered gurus including R.K. Madhuijit Singh, Paonam Jugindro Singh, Padmashree Damu Singh and Padmashree G. Gourakishore Sharma.
As a disciplined artiste of Thang-Ta, Shri Bishwarup firmly believes in propagating the art form to the younger generation.
With this objective, he established Sana Leibak Manipur Hakchang Shajel Thang-Ta Shindam Shanglen at Nambol in 1981.
The institution, of which he is currently serving as Secretary and Principal, has so far produced above one thousand trained students many of whom are now known names in the field of traditional martial arts.
Besides giving performances in various parts of the State and beyond, he has also conducted Thang-Ta workshops and presented papers on the art form. He has also been a recipient of Huyen Lallong Award.
In recognition of his distinguished contributions in the field of Thang-Ta, Shri Haorongbam Bishwarup Singh is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
