Haipou Jadonang martyr day observed at Jiribam
30th August, 2022
29th August is observed as the martyr day of the freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang in every part of the country. Likewise, the Rongmei community of Lakhinagar GP also observed on this day the erection of Jadonang statue at Ramgaizang which was unveiled by Hon’ble MLA of Lakhipur constituency Shri Kaushik Rai as a Chief Guest.
As a part of the observation, the Makaam Sports Association Jiri Area has organized the Haipou Jadonang Football Tournament. During the ongoing football final match a group of Assam Rifles along with Assam Police and Commando rushed in and started arresting the civilians who were watching the match which have created chaos and disturbed the environment of the program.
It has also come to our knowledge that one civil dressed man from a different community came along with the Assam rifles team and misinformed and misled them.
The Village authorities of the entire Rongmei villages, women’s society, area leaders and the entire Rongmei community strongly condemned such acts committed by Assam rifles and law enforcement department in the program of the Martyr day of Haipou Jadonang the great freedom fighter of the nation.
The people termed this act as a blasphemy to our great freedom fighter for committing disrespectful action in the midst of the ongoing program. It is also considered as an anti act to our Hon’ble MLA to defame him for unveiling the statue and the good works he has done for our community.
The Rongmei people are a peace loving community and we strive towards peace and development but disturbing this environment is considered an insult and takes it as a big deal.
Rongmei and Zeliangrong as a whole have a long recorded history in Assam particularly in Barak valley and NC hills district since the British era where two freedom fighters namely Haipou Jadonang and Haipei Rani Gaidinliu have carried out their freedom movement.
We carry their legacy and will continue to be a part of the nation building process as a first class citizen but mistreating us in such a manner will not bring any positive impact. We have suffered enough discrimination, injustice and mistreatment under British rule. Now, we expect the concerned authorities, government, law enforcement bodies, security personnel and fellow citizens to give respect and live together peacefully.
(Sangampou Gangmei)
President,
Makaam Sports Association Jiri Area
