'Forces continue to rape women under AFSPA cover'
Seven Sisters Post | Guwahati (Dec 23):
Even as the entire country is enraged at the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl in New Delhi, hundreds of women in Assam continue to suffer silently sexual harassments at the hands of armed forces who take advantage of immunity they enjoy under a special law.
A study by a women’s group – Women in Governance, Assam (WinG-Assam) – on the sexual assault at Dolopa in Sivasagar district recently found that although the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (Afspa) does not grant immunity to the security forces for acts of sexual violence, the guilty have rarely been brought to trial under the criminal justice system of the country.
