For 20 Rupees, He Paid With His Life
Wall Street Journal | Nikita Garia | December 1, 2011, 2:50 PM IST
Only one person died on Wednesday when a bomb exploded in Imphal, the capital of India’s northeastern state of Manipur. That person was a rickshaw puller, identified by local media as 51-year old Mohammad Kora from Irong Umang, a village in the district of Thoubal.
On Wednesday morning, Mr. Kora was reportedly approached by suspected separatist militants who asked him to carry a sack and to deposit it next to a gate where a festival was taking place. Mr. Kora was paid 20 rupees ($0.40) for the job. Police told India Real Time that Mr. Kora did not know he was carrying a bomb.
Mr. Kora didn’t die instantly in the blast, nor was he immediately rushed to the hospital. Pictures taken shortly after the blast show him severely injured next to what’s left of his rickshaw.
Although he is conscious, he appears to have lost both legs. While people including Indian security forces are shown gathered around the site of the explosion, no one gets too close, leaving Mr. Kora in the middle of the road surrounded by the scattered remnants of his rickshaw. He is shown visibly stunned, sitting up with the help of his arms. He is very starkly alone. He may not have been approached for security reasons. But his plight is shocking nonetheless as a portrait of human tragedy.
