Fix Manipur's problems and India's economic ties with Myanmar can flourish
Economic Times | 5 Dec, 2011, 06.57AM IST, ET Bureau :
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congresspresident Sonia Gandhi made a rare trip to Manipur this weekend. This is welcome, even if for symbolic reasons. A few hundred kilometres across Manipur's hilly and forested border with Myanmar, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton had just wrapped up her visit, the highest-profile one by a foreign dignitary sinceMyanmar descended into civil war and military rule in the mid-1960 s.
In many ways, the destinies of Manipur and Myanmar are interlinked, there is much to be done and there is much to look forward to now. It is hard to be optimistic about Manipur, India's eastern-most state and one that is extremely hard to reach for people driving south from Assam.
Myanmar is the bridge between India, China and the rest of southeast Asia. Trade between India and Myanmar doubled between 2005 and 2010 to $1.2 billion and can grow many times more. As Myanmar opens up to the world, India's old links with it, like the Ledo road from the northeast, through Myanmar to Yunnan in China should be revived for trade and people flows.
