First suspect always the husband : Not yet pronounced guilty
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: June 03 2019 -
The first suspect is always the husband.
This is what sleuth works have taught us and it is along this line that one should read the context under which the police have pointed their fingers of accusation at Naorem Dijamani, the husband of Naorem Rekha who was found brutally killed at her residence at Singjamei Mathak Thokchom Leikai on May 29.
One of the most sensational murder cases to have hit the State in recent years, for here is a case of a 66 year old lady found killed inside her own house with robbery being floated as the first possible motive.
Moreover making the murder more sensational is the fact that the lady in question is the mother of renowned fashion designer Robert Naorem, who is a name to reckon with in the world of fashion and designing.
Remember how the missing earrings and rings were prominently mentioned when the news of the murder first did the round.
Some stories did the round too, such as there was a quarrel between the husband of the deceased and non-local labourers who were engaged in constructing a mandir at the compound of their house.
This was supposedly before the accused left for his daily work and the murder seemed to have been executed after the husband left the house only for him to discover the lifeless body of his wife when he returned home.
Adding more gist to this line of suspicion was the report that the mobile phone of the labourers was found switched off when efforts were made to contact them after the murder came to light.
However things took a fresh turn, when the police summoned the husband for some questioning and the CJM of Imphal West remanded him to police custody for 10 days to allow the police to continue with their investigation.
The ideal course would be for the police to proceed with their investigation and let the Court decide whether Dijamani is guilty or not.
However as is often the case here, the JAC formed in connection with the murder seems to have already pronounced him guilty going to the extent of banning him from attending the last rites of the late lady and deciding to expel him from the locality.
This is where society quickly needs a rethink for in doing that they are not doing anything good for the bereaved family members.
On the contrary they would be multiplying the woes of those who are still in mourning.
Found murdered on May 29 and suspect rounded up on June 1 or May 31 and clearly the speed with which Singjamei police have taken up the case is note worthy.
Surprising too if one may add.
One only hopes that the speed is mixed with the right investigation and a strong case is built.
A husband picked up as a suspect in the murder of his wife and in another case a wife and her supposed paramour picked up as suspects in the murder of the husband and clearly Manipur is today right up there with others when it comes to plotting sensational murders.
There is however nothing good about this and something, somewhere is terribly wrong.
Let the authorities concerned proceed with the case and nail the guilty.
Killing someone is just unacceptable.
