Fighting for a decade and more – Irom Sharmila
The Peaceniks | July 5:
In the sleepy corner of Northeast India a frail woman fasts. She has been fasting for the last decade. Since 2nd November 2000 to be precise. She has been arrested, awarded and fed forcibly by the police while under arrest. Quite a few times in fact.
But ask anyone who Irom Sharmila is, no one knows her. Not even here in her own country. There are times you’ll be forgiven if you get used to it too. Consistency often makes people take others for granted.
Irom Sharmila’s story starts with the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. To make is simple, this Act conferred special powers upon the Armed forces in India who secure the ‘disturbed’ states of India’s Northeast: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur,Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
