Down and Out in the City
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
No rain this summer.
It hardly rained last summer.
Ah, the beauty of water falling
From the sky in drops!
Mine is not about little drops of water
And the mighty ocean;
It is about the beauty of
Drops of rain.
No rain.
Shaven heads!
Dirty trunks that the branches grow from
But without leaves!
Shaven heads!
Yul Bryner was handsome in his role of pharaoh –
If a man is handsome
Even with a shaved head
Then he is real handsome.

Trees without leaves –
These do not form a coherent whole
Like life itself.
Life is always rounded off with death
Before one lives, and then dies.
It looks like rain.
The noisy joint family of the old days is broken.
Old age home.
One lives alone in one's old age
Sometimes, listening to the music of noise
And at other times, looking at the lone bird
Flying slowly in the sky
With its wings making no movement.
No rain.
My childhood friends!
Crows and vultures – a rare sight now.
No bats are seen in the afternoon sky.
Mass migration.
Once I saw
A child drawing a picture of his pet
On the white wall of the family drawing room.
It was a pencil drawing
And the child put all his energies into the work.
But the pet never came to life.
It looks like rain.
