Deposit arms for talks Centre tells UPF rebels
Seven Sisters Post | Sujit Chakraborty, New Delhi (Aug 31):
The Centre on Friday asked the Manipur based United People’s Front (UPF) to deposit arms as a precondition to start the peace talks even as it extended the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the militant group.
Meanwhile, the UPF has placed a fresh demand before the Union government — implementation of Article 244 A of the Constitution in the entire hill region of Manipur. While the Centre asked the UPF to deposit all the arms in possession of the outfit’s cadres, the latter insisted that they would deposit arms after the issue of the notification of peace talks is by the government.
There are altogether six insurgent groups — HPC (D), UKLF, ZRA, KNF, ZDV, KRAV — of Manipur under the banner of UPF. Meanwhile, the representatives from the Centre have sought time to study the new set of demands of UPF before taking a final decision on the issue.
