Construction of mini-dam at Tuidimjang Village, Myanmar
To,
Shri N. Biren Singh
Hon’ble Chief Minister
Government of Manipur
Subject: Appeal for urgent intervention and necessary actions vis-à-vis concerns over the construction of a mini-dam by Myanmar authority at Tuidimjang Village, Myanmar which will affect with complete inundation of Khangtung Village, Khengjoy Sub-Division, Chandel District, Manipur and for your urgent intervention.
Hon’ble Sir,
As already discussed with you earlier yesterday, we, the Thadou Students’ Association, representing the villagers of Khangtung village, Khengjoy Sub-Division, Chandel district, Manipur have the honour to express our serious concerns over a project taken up by Myanmar authority for construction of a mini-dam at Tuidimjang village on the Myanmar side of the Indo-Myanmar border.
When the dam is completed, the entire Khangtung village will be inundated and the villagers will face untold miseries and require rehabilitation and relocation. Khangtung is a village located 30 kms South of Moreh with 48 households.
At present, drinking water facilities at Khangtung village have been already affected due to submersion of the land and the villagers have been facing hardships due to this. The villagers had approached the contractor twice but not fruitful. As it stands, this project will have huge negative social, economic and cultural impacts on the residents of Khangtung and other adjoining Indian villages.
We appreciate your concern and assurance to raise the matter at the most appropriate level with Myanmar authority, and we further request you to please treat this as a matter of urgency and take up necessary actions and preventative measures as early as possible to avert any forced resettlement and other problems due to construction of the dam.
For which act of your kindness, we shall ever remain grateful.
