Congratulates World Food Programme (WFP) on Nobel Peace Prize, 2020
Shillong, 9th October 2020
The North East Dialogue Forum congratulates the World Food Programme (WFP) for having honoured with Nobel Peace Prize, 2020 for its outstanding work to combat hunger and in the words of the citation, "for its effort to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in vonflict-affected areas and for acting as a diriving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict."
Ms. Berit Reiss - Anderson, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, has stated that "it's also a call to international community not to underfund the World Food Programme" and that " food is the best vaccine against chaos."
It is also a strong message to governments around the world and pleading with them not to cut financial contributions to international humanitarian groups.
Bearing the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people are undergoing both physical and mental stress due to loss of jobs, lack of employment, regimented daily living and food becomes a growing scarcity.
There is an urgent need to meet the need of food but without pre-conditions, intimidation.
Through its Executive Director WFP has warned of impending famine due to the pandemic which will be of 'biblical proportions' unless, we wake up to reality.
As such, awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to WFP, which was initiated in 1961 and provides food to over 90 million people a year, is a welcome sign and its message to be heeded and act upon.
