Categorise bamboo as tree, not grass : Activist
Seven Sisters Post | David Mayum | Imphal (Sept 19):
the CCS and the SABF urged the government to clear all bureaucratic and institutional hurdles to provide bamboo the tag ‘tree’ so as to bring it under forest laws. The Planning Commission of India has estimated that bamboo could provide employment to nearly 50 million people, particularly among the poor communities dependent on forest resources.
Talking to Seven Sisters Post over phone, SABF executive director Kamesh Salam said: “The fact that bamboo being a grass and not a tree is the main cause for the lack of its development in the country. The ministry of environment and forests is standing in the way of making the lives of millions of bamboo growers and tribals better by accessing bamboo properly. A change in the policy is immediately needed for the growth of bamboo in the country.”
