Blow to activists as Tripura extends controversial armed forces act
dailybhaskar.com | September 8:
Tripura has extended the operation of the controversial armed forces act that gives unlimited powers to para-military forces to curb terrorism. The state-level coordination panel had recently suggested extending the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, by another six months.
The decision is a blow to civil rights activists like Irom Sharmila Chanu, also known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been on hunger strike to demand that the Indian government repeal the AFSPA since November 2, 2000. She blamed AFSPA for violence in Manipur and other parts of northeast India. Having refused food and water for more than 500 weeks, she has been called "the world's longest hunger striker".
