Batting for peace in difficult times
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: July 16 2015 -
Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang had recently urged the Central Government to convince the National Socialist Council of Nagaland led of SS Khaplang or the NSCN (K) to re-enter into another cease-fire pact to avoid further violence.
TR Zeliang’s move is most likely set into motion by pressures from the Naga civil society organizations and the imperative to keep his government’s slate clean as the one of the contributors to peace making.
It may be recalled that the NSCN (K) had abrogated the cease-fire with the Government of India three months ago.
In an attempt to put his weight on the Centre, Zeliang has to cite intelligence inputs that indicated more violence likely to be committed by the NSCN (K).
He also had to please the Centre by stating that the State Government was making all out efforts to prevent any violence as if it could indeed.
Zeliang’s plea to the Centre on persuading the NSCN (K) to re-enter into the cease-fire mode is not likely to receive any positive feedback as of now.
Yet, the belief in the possibility of creating a peaceful atmosphere had been spurred by the manifest desire of the Nagas, as he claims.
However, Zeliang should note that difficult times are here once again in the wake of the NSCK (K) led ambush on an army convoy in Chandel District, Manipur that killed 18 soldiers.
If one has to read the recent statement issued by the NSCN (K)’s Niki Sumi, peace making in the present situation is a far away dream.
Niki Sumi representing the NSCN (K) has stated that any attempt to forcefully contain the Naga struggle “unlawfully” will only cause to inflame “determination” to further take forward the outfit’s cause.
Leaning on the past legacy of the Naga movement, NSCN (K) seems to have further renewed its energy and that too after lying dormant for more than a decade of cese-fire.
As of now, discerning observers can only wait and watch the unfolding of new dynamics and configuration since the outfit has walked out of the cease-fire truce.
