Bangladesh ban hits hilsa trade
The Telegraph | Sekhar Datta | Agartala, Sept. 23:
Fish lovers of the Northeast who relish their hilsa are paying more, thanks to an export ban in Bangladesh and consequent smuggling. The neighbouring country had banned export of fish last month, leading to smuggling of hilsa to Tripura. Assam and Tripura are two major fish consuming states of the region.
Sources in the trade said smuggling alone could not plug the demand-supply gap and hence, prices were higher. “The supplies through smuggling fall far short of the demand in absence of imports, leading to rise in prices. Besides, smugglers take risks to send the fish across the border, for which they want their pound of flesh,” a source said.
