Bamboo Cooking Competition as part of World Bamboo Workshop 2019 at Hapta Kangjeibung :: 4th February 2019
Bamboo Cooking Competition, organised by the Exotic School of Cooking, in collaboration with POPA Restaurant started today at the opening day of the World Bamboo Workshop 2019 in Hapta Kangjeibung. This cooking competition which is set to be held from 4st to 6th February 2019 aims to promote different uses of bamboo and its products in cooking, by unearthing its exotic taste using different approaches of and present it with an aesthetic presentation.
A total of 9 cooking enthusiast of different professional background are contesting in this one of a kind competition, however one contestant will be eliminated in the first and second round.
Each day’s schedule consists of a master class by an experienced Chef followed by the competition round where contestants will be using their knowledge, innovation and skills to prepare an authentic dish using bamboo and its products as the main ingredient.
A panel of expert judges from the industry are empanelled to judge the competition based on taste, quality of work, presentation, degree of difficulty, food knowledge and professionalism.
Our judges include – Chef Tony Karam, Pastry Chef Chingyo and Ms Alemjungla Jamir.

Some of the bamboo dishes prepared by the contestants include –
“Soibum Biriyani”, pork cooked with dried and fresh bamboo shoot,
“khajing soidon kangshu”,
“Mangal laiwa ooti”,
“chicken-soibum” cooked Thai style,
“yen soibum kangshu”,
“soidon nakuppi kangshu”, etc.
The final will be held on 6th February and the winner will go back ome with a cash prize of 25,000 INR long with certificates and other gifts.
All delegates and visitors of the World Bamboo Workshop 2019 are given liberty to check out the variety of bamboo food products on display at the pantry, the typical indigenous kitchen set up, and witness the different approach of cooking bamboo cuisines both indigenous and continental style.
