Bad roads in Manipur
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: May 29 2015 -
It is good that the Parliamentary team members during their visit to Manipur had gone to Moreh by road.
They must have experienced the bumpty, hairpin bends, national highway fraught with potholes and sometimes very narrow gravelled portions like mountain bridle path.
They should have gone along NH 37 up to Jiribam to know the horrible condition despite being a lifeline of this landlocked state.
For years the state government and several NGOs have failed to have their voice heard at the centre.
Journalists and some NGOs found for themselves the depressing way of repairing of the highway 37 and the high number of weak and wobbly bridges most of which were built to withstand the mini trucks, jeeps and cavalries during the British days.
It would have been clear to the MPs and officials that the horrible road conditions are not found anywhere in the country.
The situation in and around the state capital is not better and there is no gainsaying it.
Uncovered manholes in the heart of the Imphal town, graveled and rock strewn and pothole infested roads in the periphery are a national shame and a crippling blow to the state economy.
It is to be hoped that the members shall make a strong recommendation to improve the road conditions since the state depends on these bad roads.
Construction of new universities and other ultra modern facilities will be meaningless unless there is modern road connectivity in this border state.
