Army contests Omar’s claim on suspending AFSPA in J&K
firstpost.com | FP Staff Oct 21, 2011:
Hours after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared that that the state is considering revoking Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Areas Acts (DAA) from certain parts of the state, the army came out contradicting his claims raising fresh debate on the subject.
In a public meeting in the state Omar said, “Time has come for revocation of laws (AFSPA and DAA), which were invoked in the state after militancy, from some areas of the state within the next few days.”
Meanwhile the army came out in defense of the act. Speaking to the media, the General-officer-in-Command 15 Corps, Lt. General Syed Hasnain, said that the suspension of the act hasn’t been discussed in any meetings in the recent past and that deliberations on the issue are still on.
AFSPA which has often been described as a draconian act gives the army unrestrained powers to search and shoot at will. General Syed went on to say that suspension of the act in the state would hinder the army’s operations in the state.
