Anna to visit Manipur, back Irom Sharmila's crusade
The Telegraph | Times of India | Guwahati, Aug. 29:
Social activist Anna Hazare will visit the Northeast first and meet Manipur civil rights activist Irom Sharmila as part of his all-India tour as soon as he recovers. RTI activist and member of Hazare’s core group, Akhil Gogoi, today said Hazare had offered his moral support to the “Iron Lady of Manipur” who has been on hunger strike for over 10 years now demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Manipur.
On the first day of his visit to Northeast, Hazare will join an anti-dam protest in Assam and would visit Manipur the next day, Gogoi said. Gogoi criticised the state government for its alleged failure in launching an immediate rescue drive in Dhemaji district where eight persons were washed away by floods on August 15.
“From tomorrow we will visit Dhemaji and organise its people in a movement seeking a permanent solution to the flood problem in the district and timely assistance from the government to the flood-affected people,” he said.
