PRESS INVITE
12th November 2009
CAMPAIGN FOR THE REPEAL OF ARMED FORCES (SPECIAL POWERS) ACT (AFSPA)
Interaction with Friends from North-East & Jammu & Kashmir
The situation in areas where the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is in force remains very grave. The Act has been in force in different parts of the North-East and Jammu and Kashmir for several decades. It has led to massive human rights violations.
The report of the Jeevan Reddy Committee which was constituted to review AFSPA 1958, by the Manmohan Singh Government in its previous tenure lies gathering dust. However, with the UPA back in power, a review of the Act is being talked about by the Central Government even while the abuse of the law by the security forces continues unabated.
Several parliamentarians and political parties are in favour of repealing the Act. Several other committees constituted by the Central Government have also recommended repealing the Act. Since the formation of the new government, a review of the Act is being talked about.
It is however feared that very superficial changes would be made to the Act. There is a need to be vigilant against such insincere and futile exercises.
In this context, some of the below mentioned groups, social movements and people's organizations are organizing a meeting with friends from Jammu and Kashmir on 14 November 2009 between 04.00 to 06.30 pm.
