A Happy Ending Story
K. Radhakumar *
He lives alone
And feels lonely.
This is a period of loneliness
In his life.
He often remembers
The happiest days of his life
And those were spent
With his wife, now dead
And their children, now grown up
And are leading their own lives.
He lives in the past all the time,
The day that is
And the day that will be
Make no sense now.
Life at the ripe old age of 90
Is a chain of fond memories.
His heart smiles.
The death of his wife is
Not much of a loss,
But a sweet memory.
He has accepted her death
And has also accepted his own death.
He looks long at the sky
And he feels his happy days
With wife and children
Are gradually absorbed into the vast sky.
But they always come back
Like the countryside flashing past the train windows
And he gets lost for a split second
In the endlessness of time
And in the endlessness of life.
