A Fairy Story
K. Radhakumar *
Our grandfather –
He lived to the ripe old age of 99
And then died a natural death.
May he rest in peace.
He used to tell us many bedtime stories
For he was a born story teller.
And we gave our undivided attention
To his stories.
So involved was he
In what he was telling
He sometimes wept uncontrollably
Over the tragic turn of events in the story.
Apparently the old man felt better
For a good weep.
I do not know
Why I remember him today
When I have passed from manhood
To the old boy who lives next door.
I will be paying
A homage to my grandfather
If I can tell you
The story of my life.
Ah, the story of my life!
Where does it begin?
Where will it end?
And how?
My life is a narrow country lane
Full of twists and turns.
How will I tell the full story
Not based on anecdotes
But facts?
Will it be able to catch the imagination
Of a child, let alone a good listener?
