5-day Yaoshang festival kicks off in Manipur
Nagaland Post | IMPHAL, Mar 5
The Yaoshang, the biggest festival of Manipur coincides with the mainland’s Holi which would be celebrated over the next five-day, began Thursday. Like Holi, Yaoshang began with colour play but included a host of other activities as well. Business establishments, government offices and banks remained closed.
The festival began with the symbolic burning of a Yaoshang (a small thatch hut) in the evening and followed by the Naka-theng, during which children go from house to house in the leikai (locality) to collect money for their Yaoshang festivities like buying colours and other paraphernalia.
The festival truly comes alive in the evenings, when the ‘Thabal Chongba’ is performed. Young boys and girls hold hands and dance in a chain that moves around the musicians from early evening till late into the night.
