150-year-old polo club celebrations missing the spark
Times of India | Jayanta Gupta , TNN | Dec 5, 2011, 05.53AM IST, Kolkata:
It holds the distinction of being the oldest active polo club in the world and it is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. But all may not be well with the Calcutta Polo Club(CPC). According to sources, differences have cropped up between the civilian management of the club set up in 1862 and the Army, whose support has been crucial for the survival of the game in the country. The Pat Williamson Grounds, which the CPC uses, is located on defence land.?
Not only did players from the Army participate in the event, a team from Manipur - where the game is said to have originated - would also be flown in to Kolkata to display their skills in Sagol Kangjei, the original Manipuri game which is still played on ponies with sticks made of bamboo roots.
This year, however, the Army has not yet announced its plans, though the dates for the event have been finalised. "So far as I know, no decision has been taken as yet," said Group Captain T K Singha, CPRO, Ministry of Defence, Kolkata.
The city is considered the birthplace of modern polo because the British apparently picked the game up from Manipur, added some modern touches, and introduced it in Kolkata, the then capital of British India, before taking it elsewhere.?
