Imphal, May 19 2009: Flatly rejecting the claim of Kangpokpi Police that S Amarjit s/o S Achou of Chairel in Thoubal district was slain in an encounter, the Chairel Women Meira Paibi Development Association has asserted that Amarjit, a national Taekwondo player and a gold medallist who killed in a fake encounter.

A press release issued by the Meira Paibi association rubbished the police allegation that Amarjit was involved in extortion on NH 39 .

It maintained that Amarjit was a lover of sports and has no connection with any UG group.

Two individuals speaking Kuki dialect took him to Kangpoki on May 1 on the pretext of teaching Taekwondo to some enthusiasts at Kangpokpi.

Till 2 pm of the next day, family members could contact Amarjit through his mobile phone bearing number 9856674566.Barely one hour later, it was reported that Amarjit had been killed.

The meira paibi association said that Amarjit took Rs 35,000 with him to buy a motor-cycle (Pulsar).

Quoting Kangpokpi police that out of three persons who came to extort money from buses on NH 39 at Kangpokpi area, two fled away on seeing police while another deliberately stayed back, and that he was shot dead as he refused to surrender, the Meira Paibi association questioned the authenticity of the police statement.

It asked why should an extortionist stayed back to confront police if he was.

It also questioned the incapacity of the well armed police personnel to nab Amarjit who reportedly stayed back.

Post mortem report and bruises observed on the corpse of Amarjit were clear testimony to the fact that he was killed in a fake encounter.

Although six bullet marks were observed on the body, there was not a single hole in the clothes Amarjit wore, it pointed out.

Urging upon the authority to look into such alleged excesses of police, the Meira Paibi association appealed to all human right groups to take up necessary legal actions against the alleged fake encounter.
