Imphal, December 18 2009: A suspected underground activist was gunned down by Thoubal district police commandos last night in between Sangaiyumpham and Samaram in Thoubal district.

according to a statement issued by the SSP (Thoubal) Clay Khongsai today district commando teams were deployed for frisking and checking at Sangaiyumpham, Tentha and Samaram areas based on information about movement of armed cadres of unknown UG group/s.At about 8.45 pm, the Cdo personnel noticed movements of 3/4 UG suspects at Sangaiyumpham-Samaram leading road and shouted at them to stop for verification, the SSP maintained while adding that an encounter ensued for about 10 minutes as the commandos retaliated after coming under fire from the UG suspects.

Search of the shoot-out site led to the discovery of body of one slain UG from whose possession one 9 mm pistol, a magazine, five live rounds and a Chinese hand-grenade had also been recovered.

identity of the slain person has been established as one Md Ibothem alias Nazir Ahmad (27) s/o Jameruddin of Yairipok Ningthounai.

On completion of post mortem at RIMS today the body has been handed over to family members.

On the otherhand, a team of Imphal east district police commando has arrested an RPF cadre namely Chingangbam Jiten Singh alias Kemba alias Inao (34) s/o Ch Sanajaoba Singh of Mayang Langjing Tamang, from Khurai Lamlong bazar at around 9.30 am today, said a statement issued by the SP (IE) Th Radheshyam.

In addition to recovering one mobile handset (Nokia 6070) with sim No.9862668434, Jiten reportedly disclosed of joining the RPF organisation in 1996 .
