UG killed in 'encounter'

Imphal, February 16, 2010: A youth suspected to be an underground activist was gunned down today by a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 Assam Rifles during an alleged encounter near the Buffalo Farm, some five kilometer north west of Kakching police station in Thoubal district, police said.

The suspect was killed at about 2.30 pm today.

A 9 mm pistol loaded with two live rounds, two hand grenades including one Indian made were recovered from the possession of the slain suspect.

Police said, the combined team rushed to the area based on a tip-off of presence of some underground elements, was fired upon by a group of heavy armed undergrounds including lethod shells.

They too returned to the firing.

In the retaliatory firing one of the undergrounds killed and other managed to escape.

No casualty reported on the security force side.

The dead body of the slain suspect has been retrieved from the spot by a team of Kakching police and transferred at RIMS morgue for official identification.
