Imphal, July 14 2009: Calling upon the State Government and DESAM to come to an understanding, the All Manipur Students' Guardians Association has called for suspension of the 120 hours State-wide general strike called by DESAM.

Speaking to media persons at their office at Palace Compound today, secretary general of the association, O Yaima asked the State Government to 'explain the faults' of the student activists being detained under NSA in connection with the killing of Prof Islamuddin.

Yaima reminded that a proscribed armed group has claimed responsibility for the murder of Prof Islamuddin.

Observing that the Government has been maintaining a stoic silence about the faults and guilt of the students activists being detained under NSA, Yaima asked reasons for detention of the student activists under NSA.

It would be better for all if DESAM retracts its decision to impose a 120 hour general strike in the interest of the people, who are already enduring severe hardships, asserted working president of the association N Chaoba.

Vice-president Rajen Ayangba said that detention of the student activists under NSA, without any proof of their faults, would amount to inviting a strong students' movement.

President Renghang Chothe urged the Government to produce evidence, if the Government thinks that the students are guilty or free them if there is no evidence.
